Professional Smoke Alarm Installation in Adelaide
South Australian smoke alarm legislation requires specific types of alarms in specific locations, and the requirements depend on when your home was built, whether it has been sold, and whether a development application has been lodged. For homes built after 1997, and for any home where a development application is lodged, the requirement is hardwired, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms on every level, including hallways that lead to bedrooms. When one alarm triggers, all alarms in the house sound, giving everyone maximum warning regardless of which room the fire starts in.
Our electricians install mains-powered smoke alarms with battery backup, wired into a dedicated circuit in your switchboard. We position each alarm according to the Australian Standard (AS 3786) and the Building Code of Australia, ensuring correct placement on ceilings away from corners, air vents and cooking areas. Every alarm is interconnected so they all activate together. After installation, we test each alarm individually and as a connected system to confirm everything works correctly.
If your Adelaide home currently has battery-only smoke alarms, standalone alarms that do not interconnect, or ionisation-type alarms (which are less effective at detecting smouldering fires), upgrading to compliant hardwired photoelectric alarms is strongly recommended. All smoke alarms have a 10-year lifespan, after which they must be replaced entirely. We check the manufacture date on your existing alarms and advise whether they are still within their service life or due for replacement.

FAQs
Smoke Alarm Installation Questions
Common questions about smoke alarm installation in Adelaide.
What type of smoke alarm is required in South Australia?
Current South Australian legislation requires hardwired, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms for new builds, renovations involving a development application, and properties being sold. Photoelectric alarms are better at detecting slow, smouldering fires, which are the most common type in residential settings. We install alarms that meet AS 3786 and the Building Code of Australia.
Where should smoke alarms be installed in my home?
Smoke alarms must be installed on every level of the home, in hallways or areas that connect bedrooms to the rest of the house, and in any bedroom if the door is normally closed at night. They should be mounted on the ceiling at least 300mm from any wall, corner or air conditioning vent, and away from kitchens and bathrooms where steam or cooking fumes could cause false alarms.
How long do smoke alarms last?
All smoke alarms have a maximum lifespan of 10 years from the date of manufacture, not the date of installation. After 10 years, the sensor degrades and the alarm must be replaced, even if it still appears to work. We check the manufacture date during every installation and inspection and flag any alarms that are nearing or past their expiry.
Can you upgrade battery smoke alarms to hardwired?
Yes, this is one of our most common smoke alarm jobs. We run new wiring from your switchboard to each alarm location, install hardwired photoelectric alarms with battery backup, and interconnect them so they all sound together. The wiring is concealed in the ceiling space and the finished result is neat and tidy.
Do smoke alarms need to be interconnected?
For new installations and in situations where SA legislation requires hardwired alarms, yes, they must be interconnected. This means when one alarm detects smoke, every alarm in the house sounds. This is critical in larger homes where a fire starting at one end of the house may not be heard at the other end. We interconnect all alarms using either hardwiring or wireless interconnection depending on the installation.
What is the difference between photoelectric and ionisation smoke alarms?
Photoelectric alarms use a light beam to detect smoke particles and are better at detecting slow, smouldering fires. Ionisation alarms use a small radioactive source and are faster at detecting fast-flaming fires but prone to false alarms from cooking. South Australian legislation now requires photoelectric alarms, as smouldering fires are more common in homes and give occupants less time to escape.
