Safety Switch Installation in Adelaide

A safety switch (RCD) is the single most important device in your switchboard. It monitors the flow of electricity through a circuit and cuts the power in milliseconds if it detects current leaking to earth, which is what happens when someone receives an electric shock. Our licensed electricians install safety switches in homes across Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills and Mount Barker. If your home does not have them, your family is at risk.

Professional Safety Switch Installation in Adelaide

A safety switch, also known as a residual current device (RCD), constantly monitors the electrical current flowing through a circuit. If the current going out does not equal the current coming back, the RCD detects the imbalance and shuts the circuit down in as little as 30 milliseconds. This is fast enough to prevent a fatal electric shock. Without a safety switch, a fault in an appliance, a damaged cable, or a child poking something into a power point could be deadly. South Australian regulations require safety switches on all power and lighting circuits in new installations, but many older Adelaide homes still have none.

Our electricians install safety switches as standalone RCDs in the switchboard, or as combination RCBO units where space is limited. We test every safety switch after installation to confirm it trips within the required timeframe. For homes with no existing safety switches, we typically install RCDs across all power and lighting circuits to provide full protection. We also check for any existing wiring faults that could cause nuisance tripping, and fix them before fitting the new switches.

If you have a safety switch already installed, it is important to test it regularly. Every RCD has a test button on the front. Pressing it should cause the switch to trip immediately. If nothing happens, the safety switch has failed and needs to be replaced. We recommend testing your safety switches every three months. It takes less than a minute and could save a life.

FAQs

Safety Switch Installation Questions

Common questions about safety switch installation in Adelaide.

What is the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?

A circuit breaker protects your wiring from overloads and short circuits by cutting power when too much current flows. A safety switch (RCD) protects people from electric shock by detecting current leaking to earth and cutting the circuit in milliseconds. They do different jobs, and your switchboard needs both. A circuit breaker will not protect you from electrocution, and a safety switch will not protect your wiring from overloads.

Are safety switches required by law in South Australia?

Yes. Under the SA Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000), all new electrical installations must have RCD protection on power and lighting circuits. If you are renovating, adding circuits, or upgrading your switchboard, the new work must include safety switches. Older homes are not required to retrofit safety switches unless new electrical work is carried out, but we strongly recommend installing them regardless because they save lives.

How many safety switches does my home need?

The number depends on the size of your home and the number of circuits. As a minimum, you need at least one RCD covering all power circuits and one covering all lighting circuits. In practice, most Adelaide homes benefit from multiple RCDs so that a single trip does not black out the entire house. We design the layout during the quoting visit to balance protection with practicality.

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

Nuisance tripping is usually caused by a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor power point, deteriorating wiring insulation, or too many circuits on a single RCD. Try unplugging appliances one at a time to identify the culprit. If the switch trips with nothing plugged in, there is likely a wiring fault that needs professional diagnosis. We can identify and fix the cause, often in a single visit.

How do I test my safety switch?

Every safety switch has a small test button marked with a T on the front of the device. Press it firmly. The switch should trip immediately, cutting power to the circuits it protects. Flip it back on to restore power. If pressing the test button does nothing, the RCD has failed and must be replaced by a licensed electrician. We recommend testing every three months.

Can you add safety switches to an old switchboard?

It depends on the switchboard. If the board uses a modern DIN rail system with enough space, we can add RCDs without replacing the entire board. If the board has ceramic fuses, a timber or tin backing, or is already full, a switchboard upgrade is usually the better option. We assess the board during the quoting visit and recommend the most practical solution.

Do you provide free quotes for safety switch installation?

Yes, every quote is free and carries no obligation. We inspect your switchboard, check how many circuits need RCD protection, and provide a clear written quote before any work begins. Call 1300 993 566 to book.
