FAQs
Pool & Spa Electrical Questions
Common questions Adelaide homeowners ask about pool & spa electrical.
Do I need a licensed electrician to wire my pool pump?
Yes. Under South Australian regulations, all pool pump connections, safety switch installation and equipotential bonding must be completed by a licensed electrician. This work must also be inspected and certified. DIY pool wiring is illegal and extremely dangerous due to the proximity of electricity and water.
What is equipotential bonding and does my pool need it?
Equipotential bonding is an earth grid installed around the pool that ensures all metal components, such as handrails, ladders, pumps and reinforcement, are at the same electrical potential. This prevents electric shock if a fault occurs. It is a mandatory requirement under Australian standards for all new pool installations and major renovations.
Can you install LED lighting in my pool?
Yes. We install low-voltage LED pool lights that meet the safety clearance requirements set out in AS/NZS 3010. LED pool lights are energy efficient, last for years, and are available in white or colour-changing options. We can also install garden lighting around the pool area with the correct weatherproof ratings.
How do safety switches protect my pool's electrical system?
An RCD (residual current device) monitors the electrical circuit for any current leakage, which could indicate a fault. If it detects even a small imbalance, it trips the circuit in milliseconds, well before the current can cause harm. Australian standards require RCD protection on all pool and spa electrical circuits, and we install and test them as part of every pool job.
Can you wire an outdoor entertaining area near my pool?
Absolutely. We install weatherproof power points, outdoor lighting, and dedicated circuits for BBQs, fridges and sound systems in pool cabana and entertaining areas. All fittings are rated for outdoor use and meet the clearance distances required around swimming pools.
Do you provide free quotes for pool and spa electrical work?
Yes. We visit your property, assess the pool area, discuss what you need, and provide a clear written quote with no obligation. For new pool builds, we are happy to work alongside your pool builder to coordinate the electrical installation timing.
