Professional House Rewiring in Adelaide
House rewiring involves replacing the electrical cables that run through your walls, ceiling spaces and under your floors. In older Adelaide homes from the 1950s to 1970s, the original wiring was typically rubber-insulated or PVC-sheathed cable that has now been in service for 50 to 70 years. Over that time, the insulation dries out, cracks and crumbles, exposing bare copper conductors. This creates a real risk of short circuits, electrical fires and electric shock. If your home still has its original wiring, a professional inspection is the first step to understanding what needs replacing.
AusEco Electrical has rewired many older Adelaide homes, from stone cottages in the Hills to postwar brick homes across the southern suburbs. We understand the challenges these properties present, including plaster walls that need careful handling, limited ceiling access, and outdated switchboards that need replacing at the same time. We plan each rewire carefully to minimise disruption to your daily life, and we work room by room where possible so you are never without power for longer than necessary.
A full house rewire also gives you the opportunity to redesign your electrical layout for modern living. Most homes from that era were built with far fewer power points and circuits than today's households need. As part of the rewire, we can add extra outlets in every room, install dedicated circuits for modern appliances, upgrade your lighting, and fit a new switchboard with safety switches and surge protection. It is a significant job, but the result is a home that is safe, compliant and ready for decades of reliable service.

FAQs
House Rewiring Questions
Common questions about house rewiring in Adelaide.
How do I know if my Adelaide home needs rewiring?
If your home was built in the 1950s, 1960s or 1970s and has never been rewired, the original wiring is likely nearing or past its safe lifespan. Warning signs include frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, power points that are warm or discoloured, a burning smell near switches, and visible cracking or deterioration on any exposed cable. We can inspect the wiring and give you a clear assessment.
How long does a full house rewire take?
A typical three-bedroom Adelaide home takes around 5 to 7 working days for a full rewire, depending on the home's construction and accessibility. Homes with easy ceiling and underfloor access are faster. Stone and solid-brick homes with limited cavity space take longer. We give you a clear timeline before we start and work to minimise disruption to your routine.
Do I need to move out of my home during a rewire?
In most cases, no. We work room by room and keep disruption to a minimum. You may lose power to certain circuits during the day while we work on them, but we restore power each evening. For whole-home rewires, there may be short periods where the main supply needs to be off, but we plan around your schedule and give you plenty of notice.
Will a rewire damage my walls and ceilings?
Some access holes are unavoidable, but we keep them as small as possible and repair or patch them as part of the job. In many homes, we can route new cables through existing ceiling spaces and wall cavities without major disruption. For homes with plaster or rendered walls, we take extra care to preserve the finish. We always leave the property clean and tidy.
What type of wiring do you use for a rewire?
We use modern TPS (thermoplastic sheathed) cable that meets current Australian wiring standards (AS/NZS 3000). This cable has a lifespan of 30 to 40 years under normal conditions, and it is rated for the specific loads on each circuit. We size the cable correctly for every run, whether it is a lighting circuit, power circuit or dedicated appliance circuit.
Does a house rewire include a new switchboard?
In most cases, yes. If your home still has its original switchboard with ceramic fuses or outdated breakers, we replace it as part of the rewire. There is no point running brand new cable back to a switchboard that does not meet current safety standards. The new board includes safety switches on all circuits, properly rated circuit breakers, and labelling so you know what each switch controls.
Do you provide free quotes for house rewiring?
Yes. We inspect the property, assess the existing wiring condition and switchboard, discuss your needs for the updated layout, and provide a detailed written quote. The quote is free and obligation-free. For larger rewiring projects, we may need to remove a power point cover or access the ceiling space during the inspection to assess the cable condition.
