Professional Circuit Breaker Installation in Adelaide

Circuit breakers are designed to automatically cut power to a circuit when they detect an overload or short circuit. Unlike old ceramic rewirable fuses, which blow once and need to be manually replaced with fuse wire, modern circuit breakers trip instantly and can be reset with a simple flick of the switch. This makes them far safer, more reliable and more convenient. If your Adelaide home still has a fuse box with rewirable fuses, upgrading to circuit breakers is one of the most important electrical improvements you can make.

Our electricians install circuit breakers as part of full switchboard upgrades, or as individual replacements when a specific breaker has failed or the existing one is the wrong rating for the circuit. Every breaker we install is correctly rated for the cable size and load on that circuit, because an oversized breaker will not trip when it should and an undersized one will trip constantly. We also install dedicated breakers for high-draw appliances like air conditioners, ovens and hot water systems, which need their own protected circuit.

There are several types of circuit breakers, each designed for a specific purpose. Single-pole breakers protect standard lighting and power circuits. Double-pole breakers protect larger appliances and dedicated circuits. RCBO (residual current breaker with overcurrent protection) combines the function of a circuit breaker and a safety switch in one unit, which is useful when switchboard space is limited. We recommend the right type for each circuit and explain your options during the quoting visit.

FAQs

Circuit Breaker Installation Questions

Common questions about circuit breaker installation in Adelaide.

What is the difference between a circuit breaker and a fuse?

A fuse contains a thin piece of wire that melts when too much current flows through it, cutting the circuit. Once blown, the fuse wire must be manually replaced. A circuit breaker does the same job electronically, tripping a switch that can simply be reset. Circuit breakers are faster, more reliable, safer and far more convenient than rewirable fuses. They are also required under current Australian wiring standards.

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

Frequent tripping usually means the circuit is overloaded, there is a faulty appliance on that circuit, or there is a wiring fault such as a short circuit or earth leakage. Try unplugging appliances one at a time to isolate the cause. If the breaker still trips with nothing plugged in, there may be a wiring fault that needs professional attention. We can diagnose and fix the problem during a single visit in most cases.

Can you replace just one circuit breaker without upgrading the whole switchboard?

Yes, if your switchboard is in good condition and uses a modern DIN rail system, we can replace individual circuit breakers without touching the rest of the board. However, if your board still has ceramic fuses or a timber backing, replacing a single breaker is not possible and a full switchboard upgrade is the right solution.

What size circuit breaker do I need?

The correct circuit breaker size depends on the cable size and the load on that circuit. Standard lighting circuits in Australian homes typically use a 16-amp breaker. General power circuits use a 20-amp breaker. Dedicated appliance circuits (ovens, air conditioners, hot water) use breakers rated to match the appliance requirements. We always match the breaker to the cable and load, never the other way around.

What is an RCBO and do I need one?

An RCBO (residual current breaker with overcurrent protection) combines a circuit breaker and a safety switch into a single device. It protects against both overloads and earth leakage faults on the same circuit. RCBOs are useful when switchboard space is limited or when you want individual fault protection on critical circuits. We can advise whether RCBOs or separate breakers and RCDs are the better fit for your setup.

How long does a circuit breaker installation take?

Replacing or adding individual circuit breakers is usually a quick job, taking 30 minutes to an hour per breaker. If we are replacing all the ceramic fuses in a switchboard with modern breakers as part of a full upgrade, it typically takes 4 to 8 hours depending on the number of circuits. We give you a clear timeframe during the quote.

Do you provide free quotes for circuit breaker work?

Yes. We provide free, no-obligation quotes for all circuit breaker installations and replacements. We inspect the switchboard, identify what needs to be done and give you a written quote before any work starts.
